Do Small Fleet Trucks Need ELDs?

Short answer: Most of the time, yes.

Regardless of the fleet size, most commercial truck drivers in the US have to follow the ELD mandate and keep their RODS using an electronic logbook device. These regulations even extend beyond the United States border and apply to drivers in Mexico and Canada. If you’re required to keep HOS records, you’re almost always required to follow FMCSA ELD rules.

Unless: You meet one of the following exceptions…

  • Your vehicle has an engine manufactured before the year 2000.
  • If you only keep RODS for 8 days or less out of every 30-day period, you can keep track of your logs on paper.
  • If you drive short-hauls, less than 100-150 air miles, then RODS and elogs aren’t mandatory and you can also use paper logs.
  • If you conduct drive-away-tow-away operations and the vehicle being driven is part of the delivery

With all that said, which ELD app solution supports small fleets and owner operators the best?

The answer: The only ELD on the market that was designed specifically for smaller teams, Haulin’ Ass ELD.

With this software you can look up detailed trip reports and filter summaries by a specific date.

And you know what would be even nicer?

How to Install Haulin’ Ass ELD

There are three setups that happen when you get started, the ELD hardware installation, the app setup, and the Carrier Login Portal setup.

Carrier Login Portal:

  • We will set up your account for you once you purchase and text us the required info, so, no sweat there

  • Once we send you your User Name and Passowrd, simply click on Carrier Login on the Haulin’ Ass ELD homepage, it’s on the top left corner menu. Just text us up if you’d like us to send your login info again.

  • From your dashboard, you will be able to update your company information, add drivers, vehicles, and have access to all the other admin duties.

Just a heads up: The FMCSA regulations require carrier portal users and drivers to have SEPARATE LOGIN CREDENTIALS (even if they’re the same person). Carrier Portal users can’t sign into the Haulin’ Ass ELD app, and drivers cannot sign into the Carrier Portal using the same login user name. We’ll need different emails for setting up the carrier portal user and driver accounts.

ELD Hardware Installation:

  • Plug in your device into the 9-pin vehicle port. You can use 16-pin or 6-pin adapters if you need to.
  • You will see two LED lights flashing, indicating the device is powered.
  • Turn your engine on.
  • That’s it. The device will now record and retain the information it needs (your vehicle’s VIN number, odometer readings, etc.) and communicate with the Haulin’ Ass ELD app via Bluetooth.

Haulin’ Ass ELD App Setup:

  • Download the Haulin’ Ass ELD app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  • Make sure your phone or tablet’s Bluetooth is on. Your app will pair with the device in the app setup, so DO NOT pair Bluetooth in your phone or tablet settings.
  • Sign in with your User Name and Password we texted you when you first purchased the ELD
  • Select or create a vehicle from the list provided. We usually set this up for you, so your app should connect automatically.
